Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
